2017/18 Newsblog Term 1 Week 3

Hello All,

It was lovely to see the Year 2's lead our first class worship this week - they helped us think about what it means to show Friendship - this term's value - see below for more details.  This week also saw the first forest school sessions and our new Year 4/5's went off in the afternoon for team building in the woods - they came back buzzing with the things they had done; we're glad that they are so quickly learning about the ethos and opportunities our school brings them and showing us they understand and can live by our values. We've welcomed many new families this term and have some more coming to join us in the next few weeks - thank you all of you for making them feel welcome.  Each of you is part of the Friends of Tadpole Farm and we are looking for a new committee to take this fundraising group forward.  The previous committee have done an amazing job but have had to move on due to family and other commitments, making way for a new group to take the lead... could you help us? - see below for details of a get together to build the new committee.

In this week's blog:-

Attached to the email notifying you of this blog and also available on the website, are some details about the value of Friendship that we, as a school, are studying this term. There are suggestions of things you can talk about and do at home to link in to this value.

Our Allotment - Help needed

We are lucky enough to have been given an allotment by Crest Nicholson and a small group of parents has been looking after it - they need some help please to get it ready for our Harvest Festival. If you can spare an hour or so to help please contact the School Office this week and Gill Edwards will let you know what needs doing.

Friends of Tadpole Farm New committee members needed
The Friends of Tadpole Farm, our school parent fundraising group that you all belong to as parents of children at our school, is the fundraising group that enables your child to have things which might otherwise be beyond the fund that school holds.  Towards the end of last year the existing committee chair and treasurer along with some of the committee members, having done a great job fundraising over the previous years, had to step down for a variety of reasons.  This means we do not currently have a formal committee and, in these circumstances, it is the responsibility of school to call an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Friends group members, i.e. all parents, to ask for volunteers to make up a committee.  We will run two meetings, one during the day and one evening to give as many of you as possible a chance to come along, chat about what is needed and what you can offer and to sign up to help with upcoming events already in the calendar.
The upcoming events are:-
1. A Community Shopping Evening - possible date to be confirmed Tuesday 14/11 or Wednesday 15/11
2. A School Xmas Fayre - Tuesday 5th December

The Extraordinary General Meetings will be on Thursday 12th October - please come to either the afternoon meeting, 2:20 - 3:20 pm or the evening meeting 6:00 - 7:00 pm - no need to sign up, just come along - refreshments will be provided.  These meetings are for adults only so we can have a good chat and get planning - a creche will be available for both meetings.

Quick requests
All parents - do you speak Lithuanian? - we have a new family joining us who speak Lithuanian and little English and they would like to buddy up with someone who could help them - if you speak Lithuanian and would like to help please get in touch with the school office asap
Macmillan Coffee Morning - offer of use of our small hall - we haven\t organised anything for the Macmillan Coffee Morning fundraising events but if you would like to organise something and are looking for a venue we would be happy to offer the use of our small hall for such an event - please get in touch with the school office to discuss availability
Flu letters - if you have received a Flu letter asking for permission for your child to have a Flu vaccination then please could you return it this week - these vaccinations are given by nasal spray not an injection so are painless to have
Wellies - If your child does not have a pair of wellies in school yet please can they bring them in this week. As the weather starts to change we will be using our wellies more and more! This applies to all children in all classes.
Parents YR/YN Magnificent moments for YN and YR-On Monday we will be sending home a sheet of Magnificent Moments. These are for you to complete at home to share your child's achievements with us. You could tell us about something new they have learnt to do or something they have done to make you proud. You could also send in a photo to accompany their magnificent moment. We then display these for everyone to see on the board in the burrow.
YR - This week we are learning all about families and growing up. We have asked the children to bring in a baby photo of themselves on Tuesday. The new going home system using the separate doors has worked really well this week so we will continue with this. Thank you for your patients while we get to know all the new faces collecting!
Tapestry - Tapestry is an online app we use to record all of your child's learning and achievements. Shortly we will be opening this up to parents so that your child can share this learning with you. This week you will receive an email from the office  with information about this. It will ask you to reply with your child's name and an email address. At present it will only accept one email address per child but then you will be able to share the login. More details will follow after we have obtain all of the email addresses.
YN named water bottles and PE kits in school - please can all YN children bring in named water bottle and PE kits this week thank you.
Parents Y3/4/5 - the children in Y3/4/5 are working with some community artists this year and, for one of the projects, they need clean and label free glass jars. Please send any donations in with your child - thank you.

Welcome from Rev Sally Robertson - St Andrew's Church

Over the summer I took up the role of Priest-in-Charge at St Andrew’s - Tadpole Farm Academy’s local parish church.  I am very much looking forward to getting to know the school better in the coming months.  I’ll be joining the Local Board and coming into take Assemblies once a month.  On those mornings I’ll be available in the Drop Zone from 8.30am if anyone would like to chat about anything connected to St Andrew’s.  This Thursday, 21st  September is the first of those mornings.
In the coming months we’re intending to start a worship service for All Ages at Tadpole Farm Academy, probably on a Sunday afternoon about once a month.  If you’d like to know more about that or have any ideas about the kind of service which would appeal to you and your family, do let me know.
In the mean time you’re always welcome at St Andrew’s Church at 10am every Sunday.  The first Sunday of the month is our children’s service – on the 1st October we’ll be celebrating Harvest Festival and receiving food and money donations for Swindon Food Bank.  Other Sundays we have Sunday School available.  We also run an all age service at St Francis School Taw Hill once a month. The next one is 24th September at 4pm.  We’ll be looking at “The Church as a body” – craft, games and worship for all ages followed by tea and cake.
Finally, some of you may have met Revd Phil Ashby who has been the Associate Priest at St Andrew’s for over 3 years.  He will be leaving us at the end of September, so we’re saying ‘thank you and good bye’ to him on Sunday 24th September.
Information about St Andrew’s Church is always available on our website www.nschurch.org.uk and why not follow us on Facebook @standrews.northswindon?
Looking forward to meeting you soon
Revd Sally Robertson

Clubs Places for Term 1 and 2
An email has been sent to the email address of the person who signed up each child for clubs. Please remember that club dates are as listed above in the calendar and that pick up for all school run clubs is 4:30 from the double gates by the Drop Zone.

Donation of defibrillator - Janet's Puppy School
You may remember me letting you know of the generous donation by Janet's Puppy School of a portable defibrillator for our school. Janet is coming in to Friday Worship this week so we can thank her and will be bringing her dog with her.  Obviously, as you would expect from a dog trainer, her dog is impeccably behaved but if you feel your child may be ore by this please let me know.

Quick requests - names in uniforms; water in water bottles; birthdays; painting shirts; help with Forest School
Names in uniforms - please check that all items your child bring in to school are named - we already have missing sweatshirts so please double check you've got the ones you expect to have at home and pop in to school any that have made their way home but are not items that belong to your child;
Water in water bottles - only water should be in water bottles not squash or juice or milk etc. Water is easy to wipe up when spilt and is the recommended fluid for hydration. If you feel your child needs something else than water please let me know. Any water bottles containing things other than water will be sent home - thank you for your help with this.
Birthdays - we celebrate every child's birthday in whole school worship and in class - we know the children like to bring treats to share with others in their class. This can though, cause difficulties for us in school so could we ask that you keep any sharing things such as sweets and cakes for home as we have children with a variety of allergies in school and some parents do not like their children to have particular sweet treats;
Help! We need...
painting shirts - do you have any unwanted men's shirts that we could turn in to painting overalls -if so please drop off at the School Office - thank you.
Help with Forest School - are you an outdoorsy type of person? Are you free on a Tuesday? would you like to help each week with Forest School? If so you will need a DBS check so lease pop in to the School Office and volunteer. If we get sufficient volunteers we will create a rota. It's great fun!

Y3/4/5 - break time snacks and lunch boxes
The younger children in Nursery, Reception and Year 1/2 all get government funded fruit at break time. This is not available for Year 3/4/5. They may bring in a fruit - fresh or dried - snack for break time. They all know this but the message re not sweets, crisps or chocolate seems not to have made it home! Could we ask for your help in only providing fresh or dried fruit and no other fruit, sweet or snack item - thank you.
The Y3/4/5 children have also been having some less healthy items in lunch boxes - could we again ask for your help to make sure lunch boxes follow the healthy guidelines shared previously.

YR - Squirrels and Owls - Change to end of day pick up routine and All About Me Bags
To make things easier at the end of the day the Reception class teachers are going to trial Owls coming out of the usual door into the parent waiting area and Squirrels coming out of the small side gate to the left of the usual door into the parents waiting area. Let us know, after a week or so, how you think this is going.
On Friday the children took home an All About Me bag. This is to help us get to know your child and your family better. We ask that your child fills the bag with 4 items that are special to them and your family. The bags will need to be brought back into school on Wednesday so that they can be shared with the class. Bags will be returned home on Friday.
